OFFICIAL SOUTHLAND RELEASE
NEW ORLEANS – One day after being declared an All-American by the United States Track and Field / Cross Country Coaches Association it was the Southland Conference's turn to honor
John Adesola by naming him the league's Outdoor Newcomer of the Year on Tuesday afternoon.
Adesola brought home 16 points at the 2024 Southland Outdoor Championships. The South African got his meet started with the second-fastest time in the 110 meter hurdle prelims winning his heat in 14.12 and automatically qualifying for the finals. Two days later he took home the gold medal and 10 points for the Privateers narrowly edging out teammate
Jorim Bangue by .006 seconds (13.872 – 13.878).
John set the school record for 110 meter hurdles three different times this season – first at the Texas Invitational in April with a time of 13.70. He then clocked 13.60 at the NCAA East Regional earning a spot in Eugene at the National Championships. Two weeks later, on the biggest stage in collegiate track and field, the junior rose to the occasion once again with a time of 13.56 and an 11
th place finish – the best by a Privateer at the Outdoor Championships in any event. That time is the fifth-fastest 110 meter hurdle time by a Southland athlete ever.
Adesola was also part of a 4x100 meter relay squad that finished in third at the Southland Championships with a time of 39.54 seconds – the second fastest time in program history. The men's 4x100 squad set the top three marks in program history this season. They saved their best effort for last and broke their own school record time of 39.405 at the NCAA East Regional leaving them one spot shy of qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
He is the second straight male Privateer to take home Southland Outdoor Newcomer of the Year honors after
Jayden Sloan won the award last season. Teammate
Rebecca DeKay also took home the female Southland Outdoor Newcomer of the Year honors last year.
The league also confirmed its All-Conference selections on Tuesday afternoon which included nine Privateers. Earning first team honors were: Adesola (110H) and DeKay (10K). Second team honors went to: Bangue (110H), DeKay (5K),
Christopher Murphy (LJ),
Alexandra Weir (1500M), and
Sophia Wolf (800M).
Irene Bonanomi (10K), and the men's 4x100 relay (Adesola,
