EUGENE - John Adesola broke his own school record for the second time but fell just short of becoming the first Privateer to qualify for an NCAA final on Wednesday night at Hayward Field.
Â
The junior finished with a wind legal 13.56 - setting the school's outdoor 110 meter hurdle record for the for the third time this season. He first broke Michael Nicholls' record from the 2017 Southland Championship with a 13.67 at the Texas Invitational on April 26. Last week John finished his NCAA East quarterfinal heat with a new school school record - 13.60 to qualifying for the Championships in Eugene.
John finished third in his heat behind automatic qualifiers Jalon Luff of Nebraska who won with a time of 13.31, and Ja'Qualon Scott of Texas A&M who finished second with a time of 13.37. John used a strong kick at the end of his race to move from fifth to third passing both Jason Holmes of North Carolina A&T and Jason Williams of Florida State over the last two hurdles.
Adesola missed qualifying for Friday's finals by one tenth of a second after Samuel Bennett of Howard nabbed the last qualifying spot with a time of 13.46. He finished ahead of six runners from Power Five programs: Holmes, Williams, Giovanni Wearing (Wisconsin), Phillip Lemonius (Arkansas), Jahiem Stern (LSU), and Elijah Morris (Arkansas).
John is the second Privateer to finish top-15 in an NCAA Outdoor Championship. Ismael Kone also accomplished the feat in the 2022 Outdoor Championships at 100 meters. He now owns the top three fastest 110 meter hurdle times in school history.
