Privateers Open Home Slate With Matches Against Alcorn State, Florida A&M

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers volleyball team will open their home slate this weekend when they face Alcorn State and Florida A&M. The matches will be on Saturday and Sunday respectively with both set to start at 12 p.m.

COVERAGE
Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.

PREVIEW
The Privateers are coming off two road weeks that began their 2024 campaign. New Orleans will be rematching against one of their opponents from last weekend when they take on Florida A&M for a second time this season on Sunday. The Rattlers won the first match in their home gym 3-0.

Courtney Roundtree earned All-Tournament honors after her performance in the Florida A&M Invitational. The junior middle blocker has 19 total blocks in 21 sets. Roundtree had a rejection per set over three matches last weekend (nine total blocks in nine sets played).

Ava Kennon had her third match this season with an attack percentage over .400 when she accomplished the feat against Southern by hitting a season-best .556. Kennon also had attack percentages over .400 against Jacksonville State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Dating back to 2017, the Privateers have an 11-9 record in non-conference matches they've hosted. New Orleans last played Alcorn State in 2017 and defeated them 3-0. After last weekend, the Privateers are now 1-2 against Florida A&M all-time.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
Alcorn State (0-4) has yet to win a set this season in their four matches. They have played UAB, Samford, Louisiana Tech and Nicholls. The Lady Braves are a very young roster: of their 14 student-athletes, they only have one senior and two juniors. Erin Mims leads the team in kills with 18.

Florida A&M swept their invitational, capping it off with a win against Jacksonville where they hit .306 as a team. Brooke Lynn Watts shared SWAC Offensive Player of the Week honors after racking up 50 kills last weekend. Brookelynn Thomas, a grad transfer from Winthrop, earned SWAC Newcomer of the Week after tallying 53 kills and 10 blocks.

WE ARE YOUR KREWE
For 54 seasons, Privateer student-athletes have had the unique experience of wearing New Orleans across their chests.  Like the city itself, our sports teams have been fueled by resiliency, grit, and the unquenchable desire to win.  Our city also houses the nation's biggest celebration each year. And much like a Mardi Gras parade krewe, we are tethered to our community through pride, tradition, a culture of acceptance, and finally our commitment to show that New Orleans is a world-class city to live, learn, play and work. We invite you to become more involved with the only University that truly represents New Orleans all day, every day.  Join #NOLAsTeam, We Are Your Krewe!
