THIBODAUX, La. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team debuted this weekend with four newcomers and all nine making strong impressions during the Battle Down the Bayou hosted by Nicholls.

Two singles flights were secured by the Privateers and the doubles teams combined for a 9-2 mark over the weekend.

The Privateers went 14-4 in singles matches and were unblemished in doubles on the first day of competition.

Two of the four singles flights featured all-Privateer finals. In the Gumbo Bracket, Matthew Armbruster beat Remus Hebhang-Balan (Loyola) 6-4, 6-4 and Leon Nickel (Lamar) 7-6 (7), 6-1 to get to the final.

In the Jambalaya bracket, David Tesic and Julian Franzmann both made it to the final. Tesic swept his first set and cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win against Spencer Matz of Loyola. He then rallied from a set down to defeat Stefano Chappuis of Lamar 2-6, 7-6 (9), 7-5.

Franzmann, in his Privateer debut, had a bye in round one. He then set the tone early in his semifinal as he won the first set by a double break. Franzmann played a strong tiebreak to finish off a 6-2, 7-6 (2) win over Guy Dagan of Lamar.

Tesic and Franzmann did not play out the final.

The two played a 10-point super tiebreak after splitting the first two sets. It was a spirited battle that de Visser won 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.

In the final, de Visser took the second set to a tiebreak but was defeated 6-2, 7-6 (3) by Felipe Spagnuolo of Nicholls.

For 54 seasons, Privateer student-athletes have had the unique experience of wearing New Orleans across their chests.  Like the city itself, our sports teams have been fueled by resiliency, grit, and the unquenchable desire to win.  Our city also houses the nation's biggest celebration each year. And much like a Mardi Gras parade krewe, we are tethered to our community through pride, tradition, a culture of acceptance, and finally our commitment to show that New Orleans is a world-class city to live, learn, play and work. We invite you to become more involved with the only University that truly represents New Orleans all day, every day.  Join #NOLAsTeam, We Are Your Krewe!
