NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team will travel to two arenas this week when they face Northwestern State on Thursday night (6:30 p.m.) and East Texas A&M on Saturday (12 p.m.). Both games will be carried on ESPN+.
The Privateers took a pair of losses to the top two teams in the conference in the past week. New Orleans lost to Lamar on the road and Southeastern at home.
Brialle Washington led the Privateers in scoring against Southeastern with a season-best 13 points.
Brianna Ellis made her return to the court after rehabbing a knee injury suffered last February against Northwestern State. Ellis had not played since until Saturday. The fifth year senior logged 14 minutes and had two rebounds and an assist.
The Privateers went 11-for-11 at the free throw line against Lamar. It was the first time in school history a team was perfect at the charity stripe (minimum 10 attempts). The previous percentage record was .950 (19-of-20) against Florida Atlantic in 2008.
The all-time series between New Orleans and Northwestern State is 16-15 in favor of the Privateers. However, most of the recent contests haven't been close. The last nine games dating back to 2021 have been decided by an average of 15.6 points. In that same stretch, only one game was decided by less than five points.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
Northwestern State, under fifth year head coach Anna Nimz, has gotten off to a strong start in conference play at 4-1. Their only loss was on a buzzer beater in their conference opener against UIW.
Defense has been the calling card for the Demons. They are second in the Southland in fewest points allowed and opponent field goal percentage. Offensively, Mya Blake leads the Demons in points per game at 14.1.
East Texas A&M is looking to overcome a 1-4 start in conference play. The Lions' lone Southland triumph was a 68-60 decision against Nicholls on Jan. 2. The Lions lost a one-point game most recently to UTRGV.
Jordyn Newsome leads the Southland in scoring at 16.0 points per game. Newsome has four games of 20-plus points including a season-high 26 against Grand Canyon.
