NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's and women's tennis teams get their spring campaigns underway on Wednesday as both will take on Mississippi Gulf Coast CC at the Privateer Tennis Center. The women will go from there to their first road match of the season against LSU on Friday at 2 p.m.
The men's squad is returning five student-athletes off a team that pulled off a first round upset as a 6-seed in the Southland Tournament and proceeded to the semifinals of the conference tournament before losing to eventual champion, NJIT.
Matthew Armbruster is back for his senior season after a career that has included being a part of two Southland championship teams (one regular season and one postseason). Armbruster has been a two-time All-Southland member in doubles in his Privateer career.
Joseph Townes also showed strong results in doubles in the fall and he co-leads the returning group in singles wins from last season. Townes was undefeated in doubles along with newcomer,
Jay Temming in the Battle Down the Bayou. He also earned a win in the qualifying draw of the ITA Southern Regional.
David Tesic, who missed most of last season due to injury, made it to the final in his singles draw in the Privateers' fall opener at Nicholls. This will be Tesic's fourth season with the Privateers. The senior played in three singles matches last year.
The Privateers have never played Mississippi Gulf Coast.
On the women's side, a mostly new look roster did not get to play much in the fall mostly due to weather. Two women (
Anastassia Kouchnareva and
Fleur Sprengers) represented the Privateers in the Southland Fall Championship.
Kouchnareva along with
Kateryna Kalistratova are the lone returners from last season. Kouchnareva was a Second Team All-Southland member in singles last season after she finished with a 5-2 record against conference opponents.
Four Privateer newcomers dot the roster: Sprengers was part of a doubles tandem with Kouchnareva that won their first round doubles match in the Southland Fall Championships hosted by Southeastern. The tandem put up a strong fight in a loss against the 1-seed, a duo from NJIT.
