NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers volleyball team returns home for a Saturday bout against the UIW Cardinals on Saturday at the Human Performance Center. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
The Privateers are coming off a Texas road swing with their last match being a four-set decision against the HCU Huskies.
Ryan Williams had a season-best 14 kills and
Vanae Sapp had 16 digs.
Since Southland play has started the Privateers are fifth in the conference in digs per set at 16.00. Overall,
Celia Mbaya has the most total digs on the team with 176. Sapp has 165 digs while
Defne Eciroglu has recorded 157 digs and
Peyton Cole has added 155. Each of those four players are averaging between 2.0 and 2.7 digs per set on the season.
Alessandra Meoni has recorded 10 or more kills in six of her last 11 matches. Meoni had a season-high 20 kills against Nicholls in that stretch and registered 11 kills with a .435 attack percentage in the Privateers' most recent match against HCU.
With seven matches remaining in the regular season, the Privateers currently sit in ninth place in the standings. They are two games behind both Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and East Texas A&M who are the last two teams currently in the field for the Southland Tournament.
The Privateers are 6-11 all-time against the Cardinals. New Orleans has won four of the last six meetings against UIW with all four of those victories coming in five sets.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
UIW is 10-11 overall and 6-3 in Southland play. The Cardinals are currently in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Southland standings with Lamar and HCU. The Cardinals lost their most recent match in three sets to Southeastern on Wednesday.
The Cardinals have excelled with their back row defense this season. They are second in digs per set overall this season and first in digs per set in conference only matches. Ashton Rogers leads the team in digs per set with 3.75, which ranks sixth in the Southland.
