NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team will open their home slate on Wednesday night when they take on the NAIA nationally ranked Loyola Wolfpack at the Lakefront Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
New Orleans (0-3) is coming off a loss against New Mexico in their most recent outing.
Shanihya Brown scored 18 points, her most in a Privateer uniform surpassing the 11 she had in the season opener against Oklahoma State.
Through three games, Brown leads the Privateers in points per game at 11.7. Brown had three double-digit scoring efforts last season and already has two through three games this year.
Freshman,
Mikayla Johnson also had her first double-digit scoring effort in her collegiate career against New Mexico. Johnson was efficient in her minutes, scoring 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting in 14 minutes of play.
The Privateers have kept their first few opponents off the free throw line for the most part. They have allowed 43 free throw attempts through three games. That is the third fewest attempts allowed in the Southland this year only trailing McNeese (35) and UIW (41).
So far, New Orleans has forced 20 or more turnovers in each of the first three games. The Privateers forced 21 miscues from nationally ranked Oklahoma State and followed that up with 21 turnovers forced at Tulsa and at New Mexico. The Privateers currently rank fifth in the Southland in turnovers forced.
New Orleans is looking for their first win against Loyola in program history. The two teams played four times from 2010-12 when the Privateers were in a transition phase to Div. II that was never completed.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
The Wolfpack (4-1) are currently ranked #22 in the first regular season poll that was released by the NAIA. Loyola lost their season opener to #11 Langston and has ripped off four straight wins since including a victory against then #22 LSU-Shreveport.
Kellie Kennedy is in her 18
th season with the Wolfpack and has won 387 games in her career. The Wolfpack are averaging 78.4 points per game while allowing 62.2 points per game to their opponents. Deniya Thornton is the team's leading scorer at 19.2 points per contest.
