NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team opens their season with a road trip to the Sooner State when they take on #22 Oklahoma State on Monday, Nov. 3 followed by a road game at Tulsa on Wednesday, Nov. 5. Both games are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and will be carried on ESPN+.
The Privateers are coming off an exhibition win by the count of 102-68 over LSU-Eunice at Lakefront Arena. New Orleans had 29 assists on 35 made field goals and got to the free throw line 39 times in the victory.
Lauren Banks and
Brialle Washington each had 16 points.
Jayla Kimbrough had 15 points and
Shanihya Brown had 12 points and nine assists.
Kimbrough is the Privateers' leading returner this season. The fifth year senior was second on the team in points (10.0) and rebounds (4.7). Kimbrough had 15 games with double-digit points last season which included a season-high 23 against HCU. Kimbrough also had four double-doubles last season.
The Privateers have 10 seniors on their roster out of 15 student-athletes this year including three newcomers who are playing their last year of college basketball in transfers,
Hailee Brennen,
Jayla Owen and Banks.
Mariah Hart and
Mikayla Johnson are two freshmen guards new to the squad who both had decorated high school careers. Hart eclipsed 1,300 points at Princeton HS and was a 4-time All-District selection. Johnson also scored over 1,000 points at Hardaway HS and was Georgia Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year.
New Orleans played this stretch in 2023 when they faced Oklahoma State and Tulsa. The Privateers are 0-3 all-time against Oklahoma State and 1-3 all-time against Tulsa.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
Oklahoma State was a 25-win team last season and made the NCAA Tournament where they were defeated in the first round by South Dakota State. They begin the season ranked 22
nd in the AP Poll. Stailee Heard was named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team after averaging 16.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game last season.
Tulsa finished 17-15 overall and 11-7 in American Athletic Conference play. The Golden Hurricane were picked to finish eighth in the 13-team conference. Mady Cartwright was named to the preseason American Athletic Conference Second Team. Cartwright averaged 10.5 points per game last season.
