Women's Basketball Welcomes In Jacksonville State for Weekend Battle

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team will play a home non-conference game against a foe they've become very familiar with in recent history when they take on Jacksonville State on Saturday at Lakefront Arena. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.

The Privateers lost their home opener 73-65 to Loyola on Wednesday. Lauren Banks finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Aaliyah Ellis finished with 13 points and Shanihya Brown had nine points, six assists and six steals.

New Orleans and Jacksonville State will be playing for the seventh time in program history with all of those meetings coming since 2013. The two teams met last year at Jacksonville State with the Gamecocks winning 57-47.

Mikayla Johnson has steadily increased in minutes played over the season. The true freshman set a new season high with 15 minutes against New Mexico and followed up with 19 minutes played against Loyola. Johnson has made 54.5 percent (12-of-22) of her field goal attempts through her first four collegiate appearances.

The Privateers have recorded double-digit steals in three of their first four games. For the season, New Orleans has 11.3 steals per game, which ranks fourth in the Southland. Individually, Brown is 85th in the nation in total steals with 12 and 48th in steals per game (3.0).

This season, Ellis has started all four games and averaged 16.5 minutes per game. In that stretch, the senior guard has committed just one turnover. Ellis has also made 10-of-19 field goals coming into the weekend.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Jacksonville State (1-3) has lost three straight games since winning their season opener against LaGrange College. The losses have come to North Alabama, Southern Miss and Georgia.

Mya Barnes was named to the Preseason All-Conference USA Team. Barnes is second on the team in rebounding through four games with 5.8 boards per game. Adriana Jones is the team's leading scorer at 12.0 points per game.
