NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team will open their Southland schedule the day before Thanksgiving when they take on the HCU Huskies at Lakefront Arena. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Privateers had a nearly miraculous rally fall just short in their last contest, a 65-62 loss against Jacksonville State on Saturday. New Orleans trailed by as many as 16 points early in the fourth quarter but closed the gap to within three as time expired.
Shanihya Brown set a new Privateer career-high in points (20) and field goals made (7) in the loss. Brown is averaging 12.8 points per game, which ranks 12
th in the Southland. She also leads the conference in steals at 3.0 per game. Brown is also converting 53.7 percent of her field goal attempts through five games.
The Privateers are one of five teams averaging 10 or more steals per game. New Orleans has gone for 10 or more steals in three of the first five contests. While Brown leads the team and the conference in steals,
Aaliyah Ellis is second on the team at 1.6 steals per game.
New Orleans is 7-10 all-time against HCU. The two teams split a pair of meetings last season with each team winning on their own home floor. The Privateers and Huskies have won four games each at the Lakefront Arena in the series history.
Under
Trelanne Powell, the Privateers are 1-1 in conference openers. They won their Southland opener in 2023 against East Texas A&M and lost to Nicholls in 2024.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
HCU won their game on Monday night against Concordia (Texas) to move their record to 2-3 on the season. The Huskies are led by Drew Long who is in his first season with the Huskies after spending four years as head coach at McMurry.
Grace Booth is one of two players in the Southland averaging a double-double this season with 15.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. The Huskies are the third-highest scoring team in the Southland so far this season at 74.0 points per game.
