TAMPA, Fla. – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team returns to non-conference play on Sunday when they take on the South Florida Bulls. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. CST.
The Privateers (0-6, 0-1) lost their Southland opener the day before Thanksgiving by a 79-66 margin to the HCU Huskies.
Jayla Kimbrough scored 14 points to lead the Privateers offense while
Mikayla Johnson added 11 points and
Lauren Banks had her first game of 10 or more rebounds in a Privateer uniform.
Kimbrough's 14 points marked her 30
th game of double figures in points. She had 15 last season and 14 such games in 2023-24. Kimbrough has scored 639 career points in a Privateer uniform heading into the weekend.
The Privateers have recorded double-digit steals in four of their first six games after collecting 13 against HCU. New Orleans has 11 steals per game entering Sunday, well ahead of their season pace from 2024-25 when they had 8.69.
Shanihya Brown continues to lead the Southland in steals at 3.0 per game.
Mikayla Johnson is shooting 59.5 percent from the field through her first six collegiate games. That percentage is good for third in the Southland only behind Sarah Gatwech (East Texas A&M and Cha Gardner (Stephen F. Austin). Johnson has connected on 22 of her 37 attempts.
This will be the sixth meeting all-time between South Florida and New Orleans. The two teams have not faced each other since 1990. The Privateers lead the all-time series 3-2 over the Bulls.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
South Florida is the defending American Athletic Conference postseason champion. They earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament where they were defeated by Tennessee in the first round after a 23-win season.
This season, the Bulls are 4-3 with victories over FIU, Long Island, Duke and Harvard. Their losses have come to Fairfield, UCLA and Minnesota. Three players are averaging double figures in points for the Bulls led by Edyn Battle who is at 14.2 points per game.
