Women's Basketball Returns Home to Face UIW

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team will play their final game before the holiday break when they host the UIW Cardinals on Thursday night at Lakefront Arena. Tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The Privateers lost 95-71 in their final non-conference game at Tulane on Sunday, Dec. 14. Shanihya Brown scored 20 points for a second time this season and had a team-best six steals.

Brialle Washington made her first start of the season against Tulane and turned it into 13 points for her third double-digit scoring effort of the season. Washington has 28 points over the last two games. She also set a new career-high with five steals against the Green Wave.

The Privateers have four games with 10 or more steals after collecting 12 against Tulane. They are fifth in the Southland in steals per game at 9.9 and have 93 total through nine games. They are also fourth in the conference in total turnovers forced per game (19.9).

New Orleans has lost six straight against UIW entering Thursday. Four of those six games have been decided by six points or fewer including a 79-76 double overtime loss at UIW in 2024. New Orleans' last win against the Cardinals was in 2022. The Cardinals lead the all-time series 11-9.

After Thursday's game, the Privateers will not play again until a south Texas road trip comes up next with games at UTRGV (Dec. 29) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Dec. 31).

ABOUT THE OPPONENT
UIW (3-5) won their most recent contest, a 54-52 decision over Nicholls on Tuesday evening. It was the first D-I victory for UIW this season. Their other two wins were against St. Thomas (Texas) and St. Mary's (Texas).

Jhasmin Player is in her first season at the helm of the Cardinals after she was hired in March. Player was previously on the Oklahoma State staff as Associate Head Coach for three seasons and last season was part of a squad that won 25 games, third most in program history.
