NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans basketball team (4-25, 2-16 Southland) will try to snap its 11-game losing streak and end its season on a high note with a visit to UTRGV (14-15, 6-12 Southland) on Saturday afternoon and a trip to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (17-13, 10-8 Southland) on Monday night.
Freshman
MJ Thomas leads the Southland Conference in rebounding (7.9), offensive rebounding (3.1) and is second in total rebounds with 177. His total rebounding and offensive rebounding averages rank Nos. 100 and 38 in the NCAA. Since Feb. 1, he has games of 11, 8, 11, 11, 10, 17, 9 and 18 rebounds. Thomas is one of three freshmen in the NCAA with a game of 18 or more rebounds.
His career-high 32 points at UIW on Feb. 10 matched the school record for points by a freshman (Mel Henderson, 1969), and he is one of eight freshmen in the country with a game of 32 or more points this season. His six double-doubles this season are the second-most in the league.
All four of the Privateers' wins this season have come away from home – at Tulane, vs. Lindenwood on a neutral court, at Lamar and at East Texas A&M.
SCOUTING THE VAQUEROS
UTRGV enters Saturday's game having lost its last three games. The Vaqueros are 10-4 at home this season but have split their last four games at UTRGV Fieldhouse. They rank No. 1 in the Southland Conference in assists, fast-break points, defensive rebounding, 3-point attempts and 3-point field goals made.
DK Thorn leads UTRGV in scoring at 12.0 points per game, while Howie Fleming Jr. leads them with 6.2 rebounds per game. Cliff Davis is third in the Southland Conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 36.4%.
SCOUTING THE ISLANDERS
Corpus Christi will host Southeastern on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. The Islanders have lost two and a row but are 13-2 at the American Bank Center this season. Their only home losses are to Lamar and McNeese. Corpus Christi is first in the Southland in: bench points (8
th in the NCAA), field goal percentage, and free throw attempts per game. They are third in the conference in assists per game, effective field goal percentage, fast break points, rebounding margin, scoring offense, steals per game, turnover margin, and turnovers forced per game.
Garry Clark is first in the Southland with seven double-doubles, a 54.8 field goal percentage and 231 rebounds and second in made field goals with 181 and rebounds per game with 7.7. He leads the Islanders in both points per game, and rebounding.
