NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team will face a pair of opponents beginning with a local foe in Xavier (La.) on Wednesday at 2 p.m. A home match against Southern Miss follows at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Privateer Tennis Center.
New Orleans (1-1) is coming off a 4-0 loss to LSU last Sunday. In the match, the Privateers carried all three doubles matches to at least 10 games. The three tandems also gained early service breaks in their matches.
The Privateers are kicking off a home heavy stretch that runs through the rest of the month. Of the eight remaining matches in February, seven will be contested at the Privateer Tennis Center. The only road match is at Memphis on Feb. 16.
Julian Franzmann was up a set on Calin Stirbu of LSU when the match was decided. The Privateers also contested several first sets throughout the lineup. That included
Marc Mail carrying Aleksi Lofman to a first set tiebreak.
The Privateers and Gold Rush are playing each other for the first time since Xavier pulled off a 4-3 victory in 2022. Dating back to 2012, Xavier has won five of the last seven meetings against the Privateers.
Southern Miss played the Privateers last season (Feb. 19, 2024) in Hattiesburg and won 5-2. That snapped a three-match winning streak the Privateers had previously from 2020-2023.
David Tesic was one of two Privateers to earn a point that day with a singles victory at flight three.
Southern Miss (0-4) is still looking for their first win of the spring. They have lost to UCF, Florida Gulf Coast, UAB and Samford. The Golden Eagles have picked up three total points in their matches.
Xavier has not played a match yet this spring after having bouts against Tulane and Jackson State postponed. The Gold Rush made it to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament last season.
