NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team will head to Texas for a pair of road contests against UIW (Thursday) and HCU (Saturday). The first game against the Cardinals is at 6:30 p.m. The Privateers close the week against the Huskies at 1 p.m.
New Orleans put up a ferocious battle in a 59-50 loss to conference leading Southeastern on the road last Saturday. The Privateers defensively held the Lady Lions to their second lowest point total in a game in conference play this season and Southeastern only shot 34.8 percent from the field on the day.
Jasmine Jones set a new season-high in points when she poured in 18 on 5-of-6 from the field. Jones played 24 minutes on Saturday and also set new season marks in three-pointers and free throws made.
The Privateers are fifth in the Southland since conference started in assists per game at 12.5. Their 16 assists against Stephen F. Austin marked the fourth time in Southland play the Privateers have gone for at least 15 assists. Their season high was 20 assists against Nicholls.
Eight of the last 11 contests between UIW and the Privateers have been decided by six points or fewer. Back-to-back games have only been decided by one possession including the first meeting this year that UIW won 58-55 on Jan. 27 at Lakefront Arena.
The Privateers defeated HCU 62-55 at the Lakefront Arena on Jan. 25.
Jayla Kimbrough led all Privateers that day with 23 points.
Nora Francois is averaging 7.4 rebounds per game, which ranks sixth in the Southland. Of those rebounds, 5.7 per game have been defensive which ranks fourth in the conference.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
The Cardinals (13-8, 8-4) have won three straight entering the week and have been especially tough at home with a 10-2 record. UIW has the fifth best scoring margin in the Southland this season, outscoring their opponents by an average of 4.7 points per game.
HCU (5-16, 2-10) is looking to snap a four-game losing streak and they are one of the teams currently on the outside looking in at the top eight of the conference. Tiffany Tullis is second in the league in rebounding at 8.9 boards per game.
