NEW ORLEANS — Matt Weber,
Tom Watson,
Maximilian Wojciechowski and
Garrett Trahan all moved up the leaderboard during the third round of the A-State Spring Invitational on Tuesday as the University of New Orleans Privateers finished seventh with a score of 885.
Weber had his best round of the season Tuesday morning in Jonesboro after carding a 3-under-par 69. The Lafayette, Louisiana, native caught fire on the back nine with four birdies and five pars to close out his final round. His efforts during the final round left him with a 54-hole score of 214 and moved him up eight places on the leaderboard — tied for seventh. It was the fourth top-10 finish of his two seasons as a Privateer.
Watson's six-stroke improvement between rounds two and three was enough to move the Liverpudlian up the leaderboard 12 spots and tie him for 23rd with Southeastern's Griffin Dorr, HCU's Roy Barrera, Austin Peay's Reece Britt and Wojciechowski. Watson's first-round score of 71 on Monday morning was his second under par as a Privateer and included four of his six birdies over the course of the tournament.
Wojciechowski moved up nine spots during round three after shooting a 74 — a three-stroke improvement on his round two score. The senior made six birdies during his time in Jonesboro and went birdie, birdie, bogey, par, par over his final five holes.
Trahan, playing as an independent, moved up 11 spots during the final round after shooting a 74. Like Weber, Trahan was steady over his back nine with eight pars and a birdie to close his tournament. Trahan finished tied for 33rd with a score of 226.
New Orleans led the field in pars made with 169 but finished eighth in the field of 10 with 39 birdies made. Weber finished tied for fourth in the field with 14 birdies made, while Wojciechowski (37), Watson (37) and Trahan (35) all finished in the top five in the field in pars made.
Arkansas State won the championship in its home event by 35 strokes over second-place Xavier with a team score of 828. Red Wolf Jack Maxey won the individual title by a single stroke over teammate Jake Lile with a score of 204.
Tuesday's action ended the regular season for the Privateers. New Orleans finished 43-64-1 (.406) in 26 rounds of stroke play this season with an average of 296.92. Against Southland Conference foes, the Privateers went 15-14 (.517) in stroke play — their fourth straight season above .500 against Southland competition and fifth in the last six seasons.
Next up is a trip to Comanche Trace in Kerrville, Texas, for the Southland Conference Championship. The tournament will take place April 21-23, with the final day airing on ESPN+.
