NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Beach Volleyball team began their SLC Championship Tournament run with a 3-0 clench win against Nicholls, followed by a 0-3 defeat against the No. 1 seed, Boise State. Because of the tournament's double elimination factor, the Privateers still have a chance to advance. They will play No. 4 Stephen F. Austin tomorrow morning (Thursday, April 23) at 9 a.m.
The first set of the day was won by
Ashley Salazar and
Tristin Smith on court 2. Today's starting ten introduced new pairs to the New Orleans lineup. This is the first time Salazar and Smith have shared a court this season. This is also a premiere for Salazar on court 2 since returning to play after injury.
Savannah Moberly and
Grace Hinchman were also a premiere pair on court 3. Lander and de Carvalho Peixe remained on court 1, with Dykstra and Salgado on court 4 and Rixford and Ward on court 5.
Courts 1, 2, and 4 found victory against the Colonels in straight sets. The tournament is only scoring to clench, so the other matches remained unfinished.
Nikelle Lander and
Ivana de Carvalho Peixe specifically kept Nicholls at bay, finishing both match sets with an 11-point gap. New Orleans punched their ticket to the next round where the team faced No. 1 Boise State.
In their second match against Boise State, Privateers
Renata Dykstra and
Mona Salgado applied continuous pressure to the Broncos throughout the first set, ending with a score of 21-19 for the Broncos. Boise State dominated all sets of the match. They clenched a 3-0 win all in 2-set victories. Court 3 was the match that decided the result.
Speaking with co-captain
Ashley Salazar after the team's day on the sand had concluded, she spoke on how the New Orleans found strength in "controlling the game against Nicholls." She also noted that the team "made Boise earn the win." Looking ahead to the match against SFA tomorrow, the Privateers look to implement takeaways they've collected throughout the season– as mentioned by co-captain
Nikelle Lander.
