THIBODAUX, La. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team will play the opening round of the Southland Tournament on Thursday when they take on the UTRGV Vaqueros at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
The Privateers head into the tournament as the 5-seed with a 12-7 mark on the season. New Orleans played 13 of their 19 matches at home this season. In road matches this year they were 3-3.
Six Privateers earned All-Southland recognition.
Julian Franzmann was Freshman of the Year and earned First Team in singles along with
David Tesic. Two doubles teams also earned All-Southland honors:
Matthew Armbruster and
Sep de Visser at flight one and
Joseph Townes and
Jay Temming at flight two.
Three Privateers wound up with double-digit singles victories on the season. Franzmann and Tesic co-led the team with 11 victories while de Visser finished with 10 wins. As a team, New Orleans won 64 percent of their singles matches and 61 percent of their doubles bouts.
The regular season matchup was a fierce tussle that the Vaqueros won 5-2. New Orleans got singles points from Franzmann and Tesic that day. Three of the six singles matches went to three sets.
UTRGV finished the regular season with a 10-14 overall record and a 4-1 conference mark. The Vaqueros had won eight straight matches before falling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the regular season finale. Sam Whitehead was named Southland Player of the Year after going 6-2 between singles and doubles in conference.
