OXFORD – Helen Baumgarten,
Annika Metzger,
Jace Phelan and
Tyler Mitchell had events to remember over the weekend as the University of New Orleans track and field program saw action at the Joe Walker Invitational in Oxford, Miss.
Baumgarten finished her first heptathlon of her season – and third of her career – with a tally of 4,539 points. Baumgarten got off to a strong start on Friday with a second place (and personal best) time of 14.42 in the 100 meter hurdles, and a first place time of 25.06 in the 200 meter dash. She also cleared 1.58 meters in Friday's high jump – good for fifth place.
Friday's shot put throw of 8.66 meters, as well as Saturday's javelin throw of 28.59 meters, long jump of 5.40 meters, and 800 meter time of 2:50.08 rounded out her scoring and gave her a ninth place finish out of 23 competitors.
Metzger, competing against student-athletes from Arkansas State, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, and Samford notched a fifth place finish in the women's 1500M invite with a time of 4:33.58 in blustery conditions. Her mark was fractions of a second from her personal best set in March at the Lurline Hamilton Invitational (4:33.27).
Both Phelan and Mitchell set new personal bests in men's javelin on Friday evening. Mitchell's first throw 45.46m – about half a meter further than his previous personal best set at last season's Maroon and White Invite. Phelan, throwing in spikes for the first time in his collegiate career, had back-to-back throws over 50 meters with the longest traveling 50.94 meters. Both qualified for the event final with Jace finishing sixth, and Tyler finishing ninth.
Phelan's new personal best is the longest javelin throw by a Privateer since 2013 and is ninth on the school's all-time performance list.
On the women's side,
Christina Davis came within centimeters of matching her personal best in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 37.46 meters. Davis also had the second longest shot put toss of her career on Saturday 12.05 meters.
Next up for Track and Field is a trip to Ruston, La. for the Jim Mize Invitational on Saturday April 19. Stay tuned to UNOPrivateers.com and PrivateersTFXC on X for updates on coverage information.
