DRAWS: WOMEN'S SINGLES | MEN'S SINGLES | WOMEN'S DOUBLES | MEN'S DOUBLES
NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's and women's tennis teams will begin their fall season with the Big Easy Classic starting on Friday at the Privateer Tennis Center. The first set of matches will take place at 9 a.m.
Â
The participating schools will be Alcorn State, Xavier (La.) and Nicholls.
Â
14 teams encompass the men's doubles draw and 13 dot the women's doubles draw. Singles are broken up into six flights for the women and seven flights for the men. All flights have four players except for flight six in women's singles, which has six players.
Â
The men's team has another new look this year after nearly all of last spring's championship team departed either through graduation or the transfer portal. The only returner for the men's team is sophomore,
Marius Gyllerup.
Â
Of the seven newcomers, four are incoming freshmen. There are three transfers who will make their debut as well:
Jacob Rouleau-Mailly (Northern Kentucky),
Jerall Yasin (North Dakota) and
Gonzalo Cotter (Mississippi Gulf Coast CC).
Â
On the women's side, four Privateers return from last year's team.
Fleur Sprengers made an impact as a true freshman last year with an 11-6 mark in singles and an 8-6 record in doubles. Sprengers will be playing in flight one singles this weekend.
Â
Also returning is
Kateryna Kalistratova for her fourth and final season on the Lakefront. Kalistratova entered the top 25 in all-time singles wins by a Privateer since full records have been kept (1997).
Â
The Privateer women have two newcomers in freshman,
Naila Krifa and junior,
Danique Vermue who, like Cotter, comes in from Mississippi Gulf Coast CC.
