Privateers Make Early Mark, Win Four Brackets in Big Easy Classic

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's and women's tennis teams got their start in the fall season during the Big Easy Classic this weekend. The Privateers had four bracket winners (three singles and one doubles) during the two-day event at the Privateer Tennis Center.

The tandem of Fleur Sprengers and newcomer, Danique Vermue ran through the doubles bracket. After a tough quarterfinal, the duo finished their semifinal and final in short order as they only conceded three games combined over those two matches.

The bracket final was decided by a 6-2 scoreline over Aada Inna and Noemie Piquet of Nicholls.

There were two bracket winners in singles for the women's side as well. Kateryna Kalistratova was once again masterful in the three-set battles as she was last season. In the spring Kalistratova won six of her singles matches in three sets.

Playing in flight two, Kalistratova won both of her matches in three sets. She took a 10-point tiebreak by a 10-5 margin over McKenna Wheatley of Xavier (La.).

On the men's side, there were two singles bracket winners. A young squad with seven newcomers (four of those being freshmen) saw their debuts on the courts this weekend. Beltran Fernandez and Jerall Yasin won their respective flights in singles.

Fernandez was sharp at flight two with a 7-5, 6-3 victory to send him to the final. Once there, he defeated Ivan Vasquez (Xavier) while only losing four games in the match on his way to a 6-3, 6-1 decision.

Yasin played at flight three and did not drop a set in his two bracket matches. He beat VanDer Woody 6-3, 6-3 and followed that up on Saturday with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Tomas Grime of Alcorn State.

Yasin and Fernandez also paired up in doubles to reach the final of the bracket. After a first round bye, the duo won their three matches by scores of 6-4, 6-3 and 6-2 to propel themselves to the final of the bracket.

The Privateers will participate in the Battle Down the Bayou next weekend hosted by Nicholls.
