Tennis Teams Have Strong Showing at Battle Down the Bayou

THIBODAUX, La. – The New Orleans Privateers had a strong showing against opponents from Nicholls and Southern in the Battle Down the Bayou hosted at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.

The format was two rounds of doubles with a best of three sets followed by a round of singles with an eight-game pro set.

The Privateer women got the day started with doubles wins for all three of their teams. Kateryna Kalistratova and Nouray Khaled won their first match 6-2, 7-5. Fleur Sprengers and Danique Vermue won both of their doubles matches including the first over Aada Inna and Paula Villegas. The tiebreak went beyond 10 points in the third set as Sprengers and Vermue prevailed 2-6, 6-3, 18-16.

Ananya Dhankhar and Naila Krifa won their match 7-6, 6-3. The duo had to break serve to force a first set tiebreak which they did. Once in the tiebreak, Dhankhar and Krifa won the first four points.

In women's singles, the Privateers went 3-1 overall with Khaled, Krifa and Kalistratova all registering victories.

On the men's side, the doubles teams went a combined 5-1. Jacob Rouleau-Mailly and Peter Kieslinger won their two matches which included a rally from a set down in their second match of the day.

Jerall Yasin and Beltran Fernandez only dropped three games in their doubles match while Gonzalo Cotter and Carlos Melgosa also went 2-0 in doubles on the day. Cotter and Melgosa won 10-8 in a third set tiebreak to preserve their unblemished doubles record on the weekend.

The Privateer men went 5-0 in singles and three of those victories came with conceding three games or fewer.
