Men's and Women's Tennis Take First Road Trip of Season to Jackson State

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's and women's tennis teams will take their first road trip of the season when they head to Jackson State to take on the Tigers on Wednesday.

The Privateer men went 4-0 through their first week of competition. Four players went undefeated between all of their singles matches: Jacob Rouleau-Mailly, Gonzalo Cotter, Marius Gyllerup and Carlos Melgosa.

Rouleau-Mailly was named Southland Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his 8-0 mark. The Privateers' flight one singles player dropped just one set all week and paired with Gyllerup for four victories in doubles at flight two.

The Privateers have beaten Jackson State 16 consecutive times dating back to 2009. Four of the last five matches have been won without conceding a point. Only once in that stretch have the Tigers men scored three points.

On the women's side, New Orleans went 3-0 for their opening week of competition. The squad of six went a combined 15-3 in singles and 8-1 in doubles while engineering two sweeps.

Fleur Sprengers, Nouray Khaled and Kateryna Kalistratova have anchored the first three flights in singles for the women's squad. The trio combined to go 9-0 in their singles matches and won all 18 of their sets in the process.

In doubles, the ladies had strong contributions throughout their lineup. Naila Krifa and Ananya Dhankhar only lost one game in two matches together. Danique Vermue was 3-0 in doubles. Two of those wins came while paired with Sprengers and the other came while teamed up with Krifa.

The Privateers held off Jackson State last February for a 4-3 win. Khaled and Sprengers are returners who won matches against the Tigers a year ago. The Privateer women have won 12 of the last 13 matches against Jackson State.
