NEW ORLEANS — Max Feistmantl finished tied for fourth and Tom Watson finished tied for seventh as the University of New Orleans golf team placed eighth at the Gulf South Intercollegiate to open its spring season.
Feistmantl notched the second top-five finish of his time on the Lakefront after finishing tied for fourth with a score of 226. He led for a majority of the tournament and into the back nine during the final round. His best stretch of golf was a run of birdie, birdie, par, par, par during the middle of the second round. He finished fourth in the field in pars made with 36.
Watson picked up his second top-10 finish this season after charging up the leaderboard in rounds two and three. The Liverpudlian improved by 12 strokes between rounds one and two — and his second-round score of 71 was the only round under par by a Privateer at English Turn this week. Watson eagled the 539-yard No. 2 during the second round, and he finished with a team-high six birdies over 54 holes. He finished with a score of 227.
After opening with its worst round since the 2018 Southland Championships, the Privateers improved by 24 strokes in the second round to climb as high as fifth place Monday evening. Adam Trahan improved by eight strokes and Matthew Lotz by nine, while Taylor Boasberg knocked three strokes off his score between the opening two rounds.
