NEW ORLEANS – With two games remaining in the regular season, the University of New Orleans men's basketball team (14-15, 12-8 Southland) is looking to secure a first-round bye in this season's Air Force Reserve Southland Conference Basketball Championships, presented by the Louisiana Office of Tourism.
UNO hosts the McNeese Cowboys (24-5, 17-3 Southland) on Senior Night this Saturday evening at Lakefront Arena. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
Coleton Benson,
Jakevion Buckley,
Grant Kemp,
Hercy Miller and student manager Ryan Sheets will be honored during pregame festivities.
As it stands, the Privateers are the No. 3 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament after a regular-season split with UTRGV. New Orleans holds the tiebreaker over UTRGV after Monday night's win at Stephen F. Austin, giving them a 1-1 record against the current No. 1 seed, while UTRGV lost both games against the Lumberjacks this season.
The regular season wraps up Monday evening at Lakefront Arena with a visit from the Southeastern Lions (8-21, 5-15 Southland) at 7 p.m. Both contests will feature halftime performances, with Choppa set to entertain the crowd Saturday and H3adband Shawty lined up for Monday night.
Admission for both games is free for high school students with a valid ID, as well as parents accompanying them.
WATCHING THE RECORD BOOKS
Benson is 10 3-pointers shy of Jordan Johnson's school record for a single season. Johnson made 93 3-pointers during the 2021-22 campaign. Buckley's 11 assists Monday night gave him 153 for the season - the seventh-most in a single season in program history. Jimmie Smith holds the record with 178 assists during the 1994-95 season.
As a team, New Orleans has made 560 free throws - 20 shy of the program record set in 1987-88. The nine road wins this season tie the 1992-93 and 2007-08 teams for the most in school history.
SCOUTING THE COWBOYS
McNeese heads to the Crescent City as the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament — one game behind Stephen F. Austin. The Cowboys have won seven straight against the Privateers dating to 2023, including three in a row in New Orleans. UNO leads the all-time series 20-16.
The Cowboys have a NET ranking of 59 and a KenPom ranking of 66 and are ranked in all five mid-major polls. They rank No. 1 in the Southland in 11 major statistical categories and No. 2 in seven more. Their three Southland losses have come by a combined 13 points, and 18 of their victories have been by double figures.
Larry Johnson - a mid-major freshman of the year candidate - leads McNeese in scoring (16.9) and rebounding (5.2). He has 25 games scoring in double figures this season and a pair of double-doubles.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
Southeastern heads into the weekend on a four-game losing streak and having dropped seven of its last 10 contests. The Lions last picked up a victory Feb. 9 against UIW in Hammond. UNO beat SLU 79-76 earlier this season in Hammond after the Lions swept the Privateers last season.
Jeremy Elyzee leads the Lions in scoring at 10.8 points per game, while Isaiah Gaines averages 10.7 points per game. Gaines also leads the Lions in rebounding at 6.4 per game and has a team-high 33 blocks this season. CJ Booker and Makhi Myles are both shooting over 35% from beyond the arc.
