NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans men's and women's track and field teams notched eight wins and 16 combined top-three finishes to open their outdoor seasons Saturday at the Any Thiel Season Opener in Hammond.
The Privateers came close to sweeping both the men's and women's 100-meter and 1,500-meter races.
Daryl Bachmann and
LeeAira Williams took home victories in the 100-meter dash with times of 10.83 and 12.25, respectively.
Petra Imre was victorious in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:03.99. On the men's side,
Ben Stumm finished second in 4:48.92.
Ashley Robinson took home first-place honors in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.42. Robinson also placed fifth in the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 12.58. Sophomore
Agathe Tronchon - running her first collegiate 400-meter hurdles - also finished in first place with a time of 1:03.74, just shy of UNO's all-time performance list.
At 400 meters,
Keldrick Turner finished in first place with a time of 47.90 - a top-20 mark in school history and the No. 8 time on UNO's all-time performance list.
Yoran Kabala Kabengle and
Jose Rodriguez finished the 400 in third and fourth place with times of 47.90 and 49.24.
The men's 4x100-meter relay squad of Turner, Kabengele Kabala, Bachmann and
Olamipo Ladipo also took home first place with a time of 40.23. Saturday's time is a top-20 mark in program history and ranks No. 8 on the school's all-time performance list.
Antonio Creger and
Keon Woolridge had collegiate debuts to remember in the men's throws. Creger's shot put toss of 13.57 meters placed him eighth on UNO's all-time performance list, and his discus throw of 40.84 meters sits 10th on the list.
Christina Davis had a strong afternoon in the throws as well. Davis won the women's shot put with a toss of 12.24 meters, placing her eighth on UNO's all-time performance list. She also finished second in the women's discus with a throw of 37.14 meters and third in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 38.79 meters.
Next up for track and field is a trip to Lafayette, Louisiana, for the Louisiana Classics, hosted by the University of Louisiana, on March 20-21.
