NEW ORLEANS — University of New Orleans senior golfer
Tom Watson was outstanding over his first two rounds on his way to a third-place individual finish at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon.
Watson jumped out to the tournament lead with an opening-round score of 65 (7-under par). That score tied him for the second-lowest single-round score in program history. The last Privateer to shoot a 65 was
Canon Clark at the 2023 Derek Dolenc Invitational. Florian Moosmeier (2020 Gulf Coast Collegiate), Ken Looper (2009 Sam Hall Intercollegiate) and Kenji Murayama (2006 Grub Mart/Young Oil Intercollegiate) have also shot a 65 in a Privateer uniform.
After a second-round score of 67 left him at 10-under par, Watson struggled over the final 18 holes and finished with a score of 208 (5-under par). That score is tied for the seventh-best 54-hole score in program history. The last Privateer to shoot a 208 was Brady Bennett, who did it twice during the 2021-22 season. Oscar Zetterwall (2010 Sun Belt Championship), Ken Looper (2009 Sam Hall Intercollegiate) and Jose Toledo (2008 ASU Indian Classic) also have rounds of 208 for the Silver and Blue.
Over 54 holes at Magnolia Grove, the senior made a career-high 16 birdies — the second-highest total in the field. He is the first Privateer golfer to make 16 birdies in a single tournament since Kyle Bennett did it twice during the 2023-24 season. The last Privateer with 17 birdies was Brady Bennett, who accomplished the feat in 2021. They are the only three Privateers with 16 or more birdies in a single tournament during the
Jeff Lorio era.
Watson is the 13th UNO golfer to have consecutive rounds under 70 — and the first since Kyle Bennett in 2024. The feat has been accomplished 19 times since the 1992-93 season. All six of his career rounds under 70 have come this season.
Rounding out the individual scoring for the Privateers were
Matthew Lotz, who shot 220 with eight birdies;
Taylor Boasberg, who shot 229 with 10 birdies;
Max Feistmantl, who shot 299; and
Garrett Trahan, who finished with a score of 233.
New Orleans finished 12th as a team with a score of 879 and led the field with four eagles to go along with 45 birdies. UNO has shot under 900 as a team in seven of eight tournaments this season, with 18 of 24 rounds under the 300 mark.
