Men's Tennis to Start Week With Home Match Against Southern

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team will begin a mostly home week on Tuesday when they take on the Southern Jaguars at the Privateer Tennis Center. The end of the week will feature matches against North Dakota (Thursday), Omaha (Saturday) and at LSU (Sunday) before returning home to face New Mexico (Monday).
 
The men are 7-3 on the season after their last outing, a 4-3 loss to College of Charleston. The Privateers won the doubles point but were not able to hold off the Cougars overall in singles. Beltran Fernandez and Carlos Melgosa earned the singles points for New Orleans on the match.
 
New Orleans is 39-17 as a unit in singles play on the season. Melgosa leads the team with eight victories, most of which have come at flight three. The freshman has won seven of his singles matches in straight sets.
 
Fernandez has seen six of his matches go to three sets on the season including his last two which were both wins. He won a third set 6-1 against Szymon Malecki of Norfolk State and won 10-4 in a 10-point third set tiebreak against Leon Harder of Charleston. Fernandez has seven wins on the season, all at flight two.
 
The last match against Charleston saw two new doubles pairs which both won their matches. Jacob Rouleau-Mailly and Gonzalo Cotter paired for a 7-5 win at flight one. Peter Kieslinger and Jerall Yasin also paired together for the first time and scored a victory at flight three.
 
The Privateers have won three matches by 7-0 score lines against Southern since 2004. New Orleans has a win against North Dakota in 2021 and a victory vs. Omaha in 2016.
