Harer played two seasons at first base (1972-73) for UNO, leading the team with a .377 batting average as a sophomore in 1973, helping the team to an appearance in the NCAA Division II South Regional. He batted .361 as a freshman, and his .369 career average is among the 10 best in school history. Four times he made the dean’s list.
Harer spent nine years in professional baseball with the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees organizations. He won the International League batting title with a .350 average for the league-champion Pawtucket Red Sox in 1977. He was named to Topps’ Triple-A all star team that season, and he won two Silver Gloves for defensive excellence in the outfield with the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate, the Columbus Clippers.
Harer, an Illinois native, lives in the Columbus, Ohio area where he now serves as executive vice president of Continental Realty/Cush & Wakefield Alliance.
