MANY, La. (Nov. 7, 2005) – The University of New Orleans golf team used four under par rounds Monday to take the lead after the first round of the Battle of the Bend held at the par-72, 6,707 yard Cypress Bend Golf Club.
Adam Cornelson (35-36), Mitch Ellis (37-34), Jason Kuperman (38-33) and Kenji Murayama (35-36) each shot one under par to give the Privateers (-4) a four stroke lead over Rice (E) heading into Tuesday's second round.
The foursome are tied for fifth in the individual competition and trail Sam Houston State's Robert Gwin who shot an opening round 68. UNO's Anthony Cantu sits in an eleventh place tie after shooting an even par 72.
Southeastern Louisiana (+4) sits in third behind UNO and Rice, while Tulane is in fourth (+5). Host Louisiana-Lafayette (+10), Sam Houston State (+10), Centenary (+11), Texas State (+13), McNeese State (+13), Houston (+14), Nicholls State (+15), Stephen F. Austin (+17) and Texas-Pan American (+17) round out the 12-team field.
