JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (Mar. 20, 2006) - Kenji Murayama fired a tournament record 65 to take a four shot lead, while UNO paces the team competition by five strokes after Monday's opening round at the Grub Mart Intercollegiate, hosted at the par-72, 6,902 yard Silver Lakes Golf Course on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
Murayama (-7) leads three other players after shooting the record breaking round, which included a 32 on the front nine followed by a 33 on the back nine.
Anthony Cantu (-1) was one of four Privateers who shot even par or better on the day after firing a 71 to tie for sixth.
Adam Collins (E) and
Mitch Ellis (E) are tied for 15th after having an even par 72, while
Jason Kuperman (+2) is two strokes back in a 25th place tie.
UNO (-8) combined to shoot a 280 and leads Jacksonville State (-3) by five strokes for the team championship. Samford (+2) is third in the 14-team field, followed by Morehead St. (+6), Tennessee Tech (+7), Evansville (+7), Columbus St. (+7), Armstrong Atlantic (+8), Belmont (+9), Tennessee-Martin (+12), Troy (+12), Lipscomb (+13), Birmingham Southern (+14) and Stetson (+28).
This is the fourth time in the last eight tournaments that UNO has led after the first round.
The second round was rained out after heavy thunderstorms moved into the area around 2:30 p.m.
Tuesday's final round will include only 18 holes and the Privateers will tee off at 9:20 a.m.
