Women's Golf Sixth; Men Ninth After Round One of Sun Belt Championships

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (Apr. 17, 2006) - The University of New Orleans women's golf team is tied for sixth, while the men's team is in ninth after day one of the Aeropostale Sun Belt Conference Men's and Women's Golf Championships held Monday at the PGA Village.

UNO (+29) compiled a 317 team total on the women's side and is 14 strokes behind co-leaders North Texas (+15) and Florida International (+15).

Josefine Danielsson (+5) had the best day for the Privateers after firing an opening round 77 to tie for ninth place. Danielsson is five strokes in back of FIU's Rebecca Samuelsson (E) who leads the individual competition after a 72.

UNO's Tara Watters (+6) is a stroke behind Danielsson in a 13th place tie with a 78, while Theunette van der Walt (+7) is in contention in a 20th place tie after shooting a 79.

Mariale Camey (+11) and Matilda Forsstrom (+13) had respective rounds of 83 and 85 and are in 38th and 45th.

The UNO (+15) men combined to shoot a 303 on the opening day. The Privateers are 17 strokes behind leader Western Kentucky (-2), which had a 286.

UNO's Santiago Escobar (E) is tied for 13th place after an even-par 72 and is five strokes behind Western Kentucky's Brent Long (-5) who shot a 67 to lead the individual race.

Anthony Cantu (+2) had a 74 and is tied for 21st , while Kenji Murayama (+5) used 77 strokes to tie for 32nd.

Adam Cornelson (+8) and Adam Collins (+11) had respective rounds of 80 and 83 and are in 43rd and 47th.

Second round action will continue Tuesday morning with competition beginning at 7 a.m.
