UNO Volleyball Sweeps Aside Rust, Dillard

NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans used their service game to defeat Rust College 3-0 (25-15, 25-4, 25-11) before coming back to defeat Dillard 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-19) on Friday night in the UNO Tri-Match at the Lakefront Arena Auxiliary Gym.

UNO (7-9) totaled 18 aces in the opening match against Rust led by Cassidy Asebroek, who served up eight in the match. Evelyn Kovacs added six aces for the Privateers, who were led by Edina Dobi's 12 kills.

UNO tallied five aces in the first set, but three came during Asebroek's serve as the Privateers went on a 9-0 run to take a 10-1 lead. Rust would not be able to get within double-digits most of the set as UNO cruised to a 25-15 victory.

In the second set, Kovacs put down five aces during a 7-0 opening to the set. UNO tallied nine aces in the frame and the Bearcats hit -.250 on the attack compared to a .450 hitting percentage by the Privateers on way to a dominating 25-4 win.

UNO added four more aces to their count in the third set, but received a third consecutive set of heavy hitting, pounding the ball for a .370 hitting percentage. The Privateers received two additional aces from Asebroek in the third set to close the match 25-11.

In the day's final match, Dobi totaled 12 kills with Kaitlyn Crippin adding 11 as UNO topped the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference standing leader.

At the onset of the match, the Privateers jumped out to a 5-0 lead on DU. UNO would move ahead 18-9 before the Bleu Devils scored six in a row to get within three. DU continued to cut into the deficit, trailing by one at 22-21 before the Privateers scored the set's final three points.

A dual of a second set, UNO broke open a 9-8 frame with seven straight points on Asebroek's serve to take a 16-8 advantage.

Ashley Henderson was a large part of an offense that ended up with a .615 hitting percentage in the second set. The freshman tallied six kills in seven attempts as the Privateers pulled away for a 25-14 victory.

After the break, the momentum was in DU's hand as the visiting Bleu Devils scored 6 of 8 points out of the gate before the hosts stormed back with five in a row to knot the score. UNO would never trail in the frame after moving ahead on way to taking the match's final set 25-19.

The Privateers will next take to the floor on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. at crosstown foe Loyola in the rubber match of a three-match series. UNO then closes the season on Nov. 2 at Rust College in a tri-match that includes Stillman College.
