Box Score NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans rallied from a set down to
defeat Loyola 3-2 (19-25, 25-17, 26-24, 20-25,15-12) on Saturday
afternoon at The Den.
The win was the third straight for UNO
(8-9), who became just the fifth team to beat Loyola (22-13) at The Den
in the last 22 matches.
Edina Dobi paced the Privateer offense with 13
kills and 11 digs with
Kaitlyn Crippin adding a double-double of her own
with 12 kills and 14 digs.
Kaitlin Hatcher joined her teammates
with a double-double, pounding 10 kills to go with her 15 digs.
Ashley Henderson added 10 kills.
Cassidy Asebroek tallied 47 assists in
the match, helping push UNO to a .230 attack percentage for the match.
Defensively,
Alexis Daigle and
Lauren Massulla rounded out the five
players with double-figure digs with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
Loyola's
top offensive player was Gina Gill, who had 18 kills. Kailey Tuthill
had just 13 kills after putting seven together in the first set. Amanda
Oldani had 20 digs with Samantha Worsham contributing 37 assists.
The
first set saw the teams battle through 12 ties and six leads changes
with the Wolfpack coming back from a 17-15 deficit. The hosts scored
five in a row to take a three-point lead, taking advantage of seven
Tuthill kills in the frame on way to a 25-19 victory.
A stagnant
offense came to life in the second set as UNO hit .481 in the frame
behind four kills apiece from Dobi and Henderson. An early deficit was
not much to overcome as the Privateers powered their way to a 25-17
victory to head into the break tied at one.
The momentum
continued into the third set as UNO jumped out to a 4-1. The Wolfpack
fought back to gain the lead at 7-6 before the Privateers reeled off six
straight on
Alexis Daigle's serve to move into the driver's seat 12-7.
Loyola
again rallied to move ahead. The Wolfpack had set point at 24-23 before
UNO stepped up with three straight points. The two Privateer seniors -
Asebroek and Dobi - delivered the set-winning block in 'extra points'
for a 26-24 win.
UNO jumped to a 13-6 lead in the fourth set with
the feisty Wolfpack fighting back for a 16-15 edge, their first lead
since 1-0 in the frame. Loyola's gained the momentum, scoring nine of
the frame's last 13 points to push the match to a fifth set.
In
the winner-take-all fifth set, the hosts led 5-3 before UNO posted six
straight points on Dobi's serve for a 9-5 lead. As they had done several
times previously in the match, Loyola fought back to cut their deficit
to one at 9-8 before the final bit of momentum swung in the favor of the
Privateers who won the set 15-12.
The Privateers will close out
their season on Tuesday in the Rust College Tri-Match. UNO will face
Rust at 3 p.m. before challenging Stillman College at 5 p.m.
