NEW ORLEANS – West Alabama delivered offensively for a 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-9) victory on Saturday afternoon at Lakefront Arena over the University of New Orleans.
UWA (13-4, 4-1 Gulf South Conference) bounced back in the win column following their first league loss on Friday night at West Florida.
Olivia Drew led the Tigers with 13 kills in 20 attempts without an error for a .565 hitting percentage. Chanel Davis added nine kills with Alexis McHale responsible for 33 assists in the match.
Elena Villar paced UNO (2-10, 0-5 GSC) with five kills as the Privateers adjusted to two new setters in
Andre'a Foote and
Jessie Mouton in lieu of
Ryan Hamilton. Mouton had 11 assists with Foote contributing seven in her first start for UNO.
UWA hit .375 in the opening set and led UNO 14-11 before scoring 11 of the final 12 points to close out the frame. The final eight points came on the serve of Casey Byrnes, who delivered an ace during the spurt.
The second stanza played similar to the first as the Tigers hit .375 once more and opened up the scoring at the midway point. Leading 15-11, UWA finished on a run with 10 of 12 points which included five straight on the serve of Noel Corbin on way to a 25-13 victory.
In the third set, UWA broke a knotted score at six with nine straight points to take a 15-6 advantage. The Tigers maintained the edge with a match-high .542 hitting percentage for the frame.
The Privateers will head across town to The Barn to face Xavier (La.) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
