Men Host Mobile, Women Challenge Mobile & Rutgers

NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams will host Mobile at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning at the University Tennis Center with the women also challenging Big East foe Rutgers on Sunday at 11 a.m.

The Privateer men are 3-2 on the season, including a win in their previous encounter against an NAIA foe, a 4-3 victory over William Carey.

Hossam Meligy and Vinay Kamineni are both above .500 on the season with matching 3-2 marks in dual play. Kamineni has played primarily at the No. 2 position with Meligy splitting time in the No. 3 through No. 5 spots.

In doubles' play, UNO has struggled to a 6-9 mark during the dual season. The pairing of Kamineni and Abdelrahman Zaki are 2-2 on the No. 2 court for the best result of a Privateer tandem.

The UNO women are 1-3 on the season and have continued to play with just four players, putting them at a disadvantage against opposition. This year, the team has a 4-0 victory over Jackson State to their credit and despite their limited depth which has cost them all three of their losses, nearly pulled off a win over Southern Miss, falling 4-3.

This spring, Amber Garza, Sofija Karalic and Kristina Martic have all posted 3-1 records for head coach Burzis Kanga's squad in singles' play. In doubles' play, Garza and Kozue Matsumoto are 3-1 at No. 1 with Karalic and Martic teaming for a 2-2 record at No. 2.

Mobile's men are 2-0 on the season entering a two-day trip to the Crescent City in which they will play Loyola on Friday. The Rams defeated Centenary 5-4 and Spring Hill 7-2.

On the women's side, Mobile is 2-2 with a pair of victories against Judson College sandwiching losses to LSU-Shreveport and Spring Hill. The Lady Rams are scheduled to face Loyola on Friday like their male counterparts.

Rutgers (5-4) is off to a 0-2 start in Big East Conference play after dropping a pair of 4-3 duals against Louisville and Marquette. The Scarlet Knights are making their annual spring break trip and are led by Stef Balasa, who has rolled off eight straight wins in dual play at the bottom of the lineup.

Both UNO teams will return to the court on Mar. 18 for a match against Spring Hill at 12 p.m. with the women also playing Samford on Mar. 19 at 10 a.m.
