LORMAN, Miss. - The University of New Orleans split a pair of tennis matches late Wednesday afternoon against Alcorn State with the men winning 5-2 and the women falling 4-3.
The UNO men improved to 6-2 on the season with the victory against Alcorn.
The Privateers split the first two doubles' matches off the court before Vinay Kamineni and Abdelrahman Zaki broke through for an 8-6 win at the No. 2 position over Pushpendra Rajpurouit and Winfried Weinbeer.
In singles' play, UNO carried the momentum by claiming 4 of 6 singles' matches.
Benjamin Bouhana was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Anton Krutkin at No. 1 with Vinay Kamineni brushing by Alexandr Lidzar 7-6, 6-3 at the No. 2 court. Zaki was leading 3-0 in the first set after his opponent retired at No. 3 with Hossam Meligy closing out the victories with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Yanick Shearron-Hawkins at No. 4.
On the women's side, the Privateers fell to 3-7 by losing their third straight match.
The short-handed UNO women picked up a doubles' win with Kozue Matsumoto and Amber Garza at No. 1 over Kersten Vanem and Merilin Tipp by an 8-4 verdict, but the No. 2 tandem of Kristina Martic and Sofija Karalic could not clinch the doubles' point as Alcorn claimed an 8-6 win by Katherine Hoepelman and Arielle Buchmann at the position.
In singles' play, the Privateers won 3 of 4 contested matches, but would ultimately fall short due to forfeitures at No. 5 and No. 6 positions.
Martic defeated Buchmann 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 2 court with Garza and Karalic picking up victories at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions. Garza was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Tipp with Karalic defeating Chan Rutherford 6-4, 6-2.
Both UNO teams will continue their spring season on Friday, Apr. 1 at 2:30 p.m. against crosstown foe Loyola (N.O) at the University Tennis Center.
