UNO Sweeps Aside Crosstown Foe Loyola

Wife Defeats Husband in First Meeting

NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams made assistant coach Piyanart Engineer a winner in the dual against her husband Zubin's Loyola-New Orleans teams on Friday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.

In the first match-up between the coaching couple since they arrived in the Crescent City, the UNO men (7-2) picked up a 7-0 victory over the Wolfpack (1-6) with the Privateer women (4-7) rounding out the sweep of the duals against LU (1-7) with a 5-1 win.

The UNO men claimed all three doubles' matches against the Wolfpack highlighted by the tandem of Joshua Marx and Abdelrahman Zaki improving to 2-0 with a win at No. 2.

Benjamin Bouhana and Hossam Meligy won at No. 1 with Rohit Chivukula and Oliver Grimbly bouncing back in the win column with a victory at the No. 3 court.

In singles' play, the Privateers, who were playing without customary No. 2 player Vinay Kamineni, rolled in straight sets.

Of the six matches, Zaki, Grimbly and Marx won against their opponents without yielding a single game. The win for Marx at No. 6 was the first dual singles' victory of his collegiate career.

Like their male counterparts, the UNO women were not threatened by LU.

Kozue Matsumoto and Amber Garza won 8-2 at No. 1 over Claire Landry and Frances Bonin with Sofija Karalic and Kristina Martic completing the sweep of doubles' matches with an 8-0 defeat of Katie Beargie and Chelsea Keene at No. 2.

When play turned to singles' action, the Wolfpack posted a win at No. 5 by Loraine Torres by walkover. The victory would be the only one for the LU women as the four other matches ended with a UNO straight-set victory.

Half of the straight-set wins came in the form of 6-0, 6-0 victories as Martic and Karalic blanked their opponents at No. 2 and No. 4 positions, respectively.

Both Privateers tennis teams will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they face Xavier (La.) at the University Tennis Center.
