West Florida Sends UNO to Tennis Defeat

Argos Give Privateers a Taste of What to Expect in Division II

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of New Orleans tennis teams closed their 2010-11 season with a preview of what they can expect next year at the Division II level, dropping a pair of matches against the University of West Florida.

Nationally ranked and a perennial Gulf South Conference title contender on both sides of the court, the No. 8 UWF men (18-8) defeated UNO (10-4) by a 9-0 result with the Privateer women (7-9) falling 6-3 to the No. 7 Argos (17-9). The teams utilized Division II scoring rules with each doubles' match counting for a single point, unlike Division I.

The nationally-ranked UWF men did not yield a single victory by UNO in singles' or doubles' play.

In doubles' play, the Argos allowed the Privateers just four games apiece at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions on way to sweeping all three doubles' matches.

When play turned to singles, the Argos won in straight sets at positions No. 3 through No. 6. The top two UNO singles' players both put up fights, falling in third set tiebreakers.

Benjamin Bouhana won the opening set before falling 0-6, 7-6, 10-6 to Andrey Pozhidaev at the No. 1 court with Sean Gunnels holding off Privateer Vinay Kamineni 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 on No. 2.

The women's side was more competitive as the short-handed UNO squad would have fallen 4-3 if scoring was conducted under Division I scoring rules.

UWF won all three doubles' matches before the Privateers put up a fight in singles' play by claiming 3 of 4 contested matches.

Kristina Martic was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at No. 2 over Jacqueline March while Sofija Karalic picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 4 position over Jessica Hsu.

Playing their final matches as a Privateer, Amber Garza dug deep for a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 win at No. 3 over Naomi Higa with Kozue Matsumoto dropping a 6-4, 6-1 result to Luiza Sonnervig 6-4, 6-1 on No. 1.

Both UNO teams were playing what is expected to be their final match as a Division I program. The University is expecting to compete as a transitional Division II member in 2011-12 if granted approval by the NCAA later this month.
