Privateer Tennis Begins Road Trip with Setback to William Carey

Women Win 4-3, Men Fall 5-2

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The University of New Orleans tennis teams began their three day, four dual road trip on the wrong foot, dropping a pair of duals to NAIA foe William Carey on Friday afternoon.

The WCU men (9-8) avenged a 4-3 loss on Feb. 19 in New Orleans with a 5-2 victory over their UNO counterparts while the Crusader women (11-5) edged the short-handed Privateers (5-8) by a 4-3 score.

In the men's match, WCU won 2 of 3 doubles' matches to claim the doubles' point.

Abdelrahman Zaki and Vinay Kamineni posted the lone doubles' victory for UNO with a 8-2 win at the No. 2 court with Benjamin Bouhana and Hossam Meligy falling short by an 8-6 result at the No. 1 position against Jody Claasen and Thomas Rizk in the match that decided the doubles' point.

When play turned to singles', Zaki and Meligy posted the only victories for the squad. Zaki was a 6-4, 7-6 (6) winner at No. 3 over Younes Hidass while Meligy dispatched Dominik Kardell 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4.

In the women's dual, the No. 13 squad in NAIA in women's tennis, WCU was able to take advantage of the short-handed Privateers.

In doubles' play, Kozue Matsumoto and Amber Garza won their fifth straight with an 8-0 victory at the No. 1 court with Kristina Martic and Sofija Karalic falling 8-6 at the No. 2 position in the decisive match.

UNO remained within reach of winning the dual, but needed to take all four contested singles' matches.

The team would fall short of the goal as the Privateers won just three of the matches. Matsumoto won in straight sets with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Petra Pesic at No. 1 with Garza rolling Alexandra Kaluza 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3.

Karalic posted a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 4 over Anastasia Khabirova, but Martic could not finalize the deal, falling short 6-2, 6-0 to Maja Vuzem at the No. 2 court.

Both UNO teams will continue their road swing with a 10 a.m. match in Mobile, Ala. on Saturday against Spring Hill before moving east for a 4 p.m. dual against Lambuth in Pensacola, Fla. later in the day.
