MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State wrapped up a three-game sweep on Sunday afternoon with a 13-2 victory over the University of New Orleans.
Freshman Jared King led KSU (31-20) with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate that included two runs, two RBIs and a fifth-inning home run. Teammate and older brother Jason King was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
The offensive outburst by the brothers allowed the hosts to remain in control of the game, including a 6-0 lead after the first three innings of play. The Wildcats scored two runs in the first, three more in the second and one more in the third to build up their advantage.
UNO (3-48) starter Zach Kelt (1-11) failed to retire a batter in the second inning, allowing the first three Wildcats he faced in the frame to reach base. The right-handed pitcher officially lasted an inning, yielding five runs on three hits and two walks before Coby Landry came in out of the bullpen.
The Privateers cut the lead down to four in the fourth inning by plating two runs.
Jake Palmisano went 2-for-3 in the game, including a double that scored Cameron Wheeless with Chris Geronimo's sacrifice to center field bringing home Blake DesRoches. The runs represented the final offensive production on the day for UNO.
KSU answered back with three runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings with one final score in the seventh inning to produce the game's outcome.
Shane Conlon (3-1) allowed two runs on six hits while striking out four to pick up the win for the Wildcats. Reliever Gerardo Esquivel pitched two innings of scoreless relief while Blake Freeman and Jared Moore pitched an inning apiece without allowing the Privateers to produce a run.
