Defending GSC Champion UWF Silences UNO Offense

Privateers Led by Hansen's Nine Kills in Defeat

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of New Orleans offensive woes continued on Tuesday night as three-time defending Gulf South Conference champion West Florida  rolled to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-13) win at the UWF Field House.

UWF (5-7) tallied a season-high nine service aces to pick up their third win in their last four matches. The previous-high for the host Argos was seven in a victory last week against Mobile.

Five different players had at least five kills for UWF, led by Leah Buchanan with seven kills in 10 attacks. Chandler Carney added six kills, reaching the mark in just six attack attempts.

UNO (2-6) struggled to mount an attack against the Argos, hitting  -.022 for the match.

Laila Hansen was the top hitter for the Privateers, posting nine kills in 23 attack attempts. Hansen started the match by converting her first three attacks into kills.

Elena Villar and Tory Hearn had four kills apiece for UNO, which received 13 digs from Jessie Mouton and  20 assists from Ryan Hamilton.

The match started with a back-and-forth opening set. After seven ties, the Argos broke open a deadlock at 13 with an 8-1 run to take a 21-14 advantage.

UWF maintained their edge for a 25-16 victory, hitting .250 in the opening frame compared to just .031 for the Privateers.

The Argos never trailed in the second set as the momentum carried over from the opening stanza win. UWF led UNO 7-6 before scoring 12 of the next 18 points for a 19-12 edge. The advantage continued to grow as the Argos closed out a 25-14 second set victory.

After a short break, UWF stormed out to a 5-0 lead in the third set causing UNO head coach Kim Young-Buford to call a timeout. The Argos continued to build the advantage to 8-0 before Walker tallied a kill for the Privateers to end the run.

After trailing 16-2, UNO outscored UWF 11-9 prior to the set's conclusion. The Argos hit .364 for the frame and rounded out the 3-0 sweep with a 25-13 win.

The Privateers will continue their road swing with matches on Friday at 7 p.m. against North Alabama and Saturday at 2 p.m. against Christian Brothers. Live stats will be available for both contests with live video set for Saturday.
