UNO-Loyola Box Score

NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans women's basketball team started the 2012 portion of their slate with a 82-54 loss to Loyola on Monday afternoon in The Den.

UNO (0-14) topped 40 percent from the field for the first time in four games with a 40.4 percent shooting clip.

The Lady Privateers however could not overcome a Loyola (11-1) squad that was routinely able to take advantage of second chance opportunities and Lady Privateer turnovers throughout the contest.

The Wolfpack was led by a 23-point, 11-rebound effort by Jasmine Brewer. Brewer set the tone in the first half by accumulating 16 points and nine rebounds in the opening half.

Brewer was one of four Loyola players in double-figures as Keiva Council scored 17 points with Amy Moody and Callie McNally scoring 13 and 10 points, respectively. The Wolfpack scored 25 points off of UNO turnovers while adding 16 points on second chance opportunities.

Mirjam Sipos led the Lady Privateers with 16 points while Megan Buckley contributed another 10 points. Rounding out the double-figure scorers was Kayla Chaney, who netted a career-high 11 points, her first effort in double-figures this season.

In the opening half, the Wolfpack scored 16 points off of 12 UNO turnovers while adding 10 points on second chance opportunities during the same stretch.

The Lady Privateers held a brief lead at 2-0 after a pair of Tiffany Wallace free throws before Loyola scored eight in a row. The Wolfpack lead grew to 10 points at 16-6 before UNO scored six of the next eight points to get the lead down to at 6 at 18-12 with 12:51 remaining before the break.

Loyola turned up the offensive intensity, scoring 27 of the final 35 points to head into the half with a 45-20 advantage.  The Wolfpack shot 53.6 percent from the field, 5 of 7 from beyond the arc and 10 of 12 from the charity stripe over the first 20 minutes in comparison to the Lady Privateers, who shot 40 percent from the field.

UNO slightly improved its shooting to 40.6 percent over the second half, making three shots from beyond the arc in the process.

Though the Lady Privateers were never a threat for the lead as Loyola's advantage grew to a high of 37 with 4:26 remaining, UNO put forth a competitive effort in being outscored 37-34 in the second half.

Sipos scored 10 of her points in the second half to help the Lady Privateers after the break while Wallace grabbed five offensive rebounds providing UNO an opportunity to score seven second-chance opportunities in the final half.

Next for the Lady Privateers is a short trip up I-55 to Hammond, La. to face Southeastern La. on Wednesday at 7 p.m. SLU claimed both ends of a home-and-home against UNO last season.
