NATCHITOCHES, La. – The New Orleans women's doubles' tandem of
Fanny Benincasa and
Marta Sans advanced to the 'Flight 2' championship match after posting a pair of wins on Friday at the Lady Demon Invite.
Benincasa and Sans started the opening day of the tournament by defeating Louisiana-Lafayette's Eleanor Bradshaw and Nicole Breaux 8-2. The Privateer duo continued its winning ways in the semifinals with a 9-7 victory over Sam Houston State's Imke Jagau and Olivia Battye.
Following a day off on Saturday from doubles' competition, Benincasa and Sans will take part in a championship match on Sunday. Their opponents will be Mackenzie Oskin of Southern Miss, who is teaming with Lamar's Alessandra Pennessi.
The other victory for UNO came in singles' play as freshman Soledad Arroyo defeated Carolina Maso of LU by a 7-5, 1-6, 10-8 result in 'Flight 2'. Arroyo advances to Saturday's quarterfinal against ULM's Justyna Krol.
In matches contested by the Privateers in singles' play, Benincasa fell 1-6, 7-5, 10-2 to SHSU's Jagau in 'Flight 2' while both Sans and
Kristina Martic dropped straight set matches in 'Flight 1'. Sans lost 6-4, 6-0 to ULM's Sophie Rufyikiri with Martic falling 6-1, 6-1 to Malena Gordo of Stephen F. Austin.
In doubles' play, Martic and Arroyo were defeated in both matches in 'Flight 1'. The duo lost 8-3 to Gordo and Margot de Haan of SFA before retiring down 5-2 against USM's Kate Lanier and Lauren May in a consolation match.
