FRISCO, Texas –
Fleur Sprengers rode an undefeated week in singles and doubles to a Southland Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week award announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.
The sensational sophomore put forth four more wins between singles and doubles, which moved her season record to 22-4 combined. Sprengers is now 13-1 in singles play.
It started with a pair of wins against Southeastern that helped the Privateers to a 4-3 decision over the Lady Lions. Sprengers and
Danique Vermue have been a dynamic duo at flight one and they showed it again with a 7-5 win over Southeastern's pair of Bente Bierma and Paige Duncan.
When it got to singles, Sprengers was too much for Panatchakorn Sunsara, winning 6-2, 6-1. Sprengers now has 13 sets this year that she's won without conceding more than two games.
Against 17-1 McNeese, Sprengers collected two more victories. In doubles, they raced out to a 5-0 lead before holding off a belated charge from Stella Rundova and Elena Morales to win 6-3.
Then in singles, Sprengers beat the defending Southland Player and Freshman of the Year. A late service break was one of two in the first set for Sprengers against Salome Fluri. She carried that momentum into a 4-1 lead early in the second set. Overall, Sprengers broke Fluri's serve four times in a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
She handed Fluri just her third singles loss of the season.
Sprengers becomes the first women's player to earn the conference's weekly award and the second overall this season. Jacob Rouleau-Mailly also earned the conference's weekly honor on the men's side.
