NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans women's tennis team was handed a 5-2 loss by No. 1 ranked BYU-Hawaii on Monday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
UNO (8-4) lost for the second straight dual, but not without posting three victories against a BYU-H (17-0) squad that had conceded just six matches during the previous 16 duals on its slate.
Of the Seasiders' wins on the year, 12 had come in shutout form with just No. 5 Hawaii Pacific matching the Privateers with a trio of victories against the nation's No. 1 NCAA Division II program. Monday represented the third win over an NCAA Division I foe for BYU-H.
The first of the three victories on the day came from the No. 3 duo of
Sofija Karalic and
Kristina Martic. The Privateer duo emerged from a tiebreaker with a 9-8 (3) result over Marika Kobayashi and Sasha Ulbrichtova.
The other wins came from the No. 4 and No. 5 positions in the singles' lineup.
Juliet Labarthe defeated Tanja Rebholz 6-3, 7-6 (1) at No. 4 with
Fanny Benincasa dispatching Marika Kobayashi 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5. The victories improved Labarthe to 11-1 and Benincasa to 10-2 on the season.
The UNO women's tennis team will hit the road to play eight matches over eight days starting on Mar. 31 with duals against Saint Leo's and Tampa. The pair of matches is part of a spring break trip which will take the Privateers through Florida and Georgia.
