NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans women's tennis team played a ranked foe for the first time this season, falling 4-0 to No. 56 Tulane on Wednesday night at City Park.
The victory kept Tulane (5-4) undefeated against non-ranked competition this year, while sending UNO (1-4) to its fourth defeat in five dual matches on the season. The dual completed a four-match swing on the road for the Privateers.
Starting with doubles' play, the Green Wave won each of the five completed matches on the day.
Hila Elster and Klara Vyskocilova defeated
Marta Sans and
Fanny Benincasa 8-0 at the No. 2 court with Caroline Thornton and Caroline Magnusson besting
Paula Jimenez Sanchez and
Victoria Svensson 8-0 at No. 3. The victories provided Tulane with the doubles' point.
When play turned to singles' competition, the Green Wave won their three points by claiming the bottom three spots in the lineup.
Elster defeated Benincasa 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4, Jacqui Katz claimed a 6-0, 6-3 win over Jimenez on the No. 5 court with Emma Helisten concluding play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Svensson at No. 6.
Though unfinished, the top three singles' matches were competitive with the scores really close according to UNO head coach
Burzis Kanga.
“The girls played really well tonight against one of the most impressive Tulane teams we have seen,” said Kanga. “Our scores were really close in the top three singles' spots and this experience is something our team can build upon.”
The schedule continues for the UNO women's tennis team with an 11 a.m. match on Sunday morning at the University Tennis Center against McNeese State. With rain in the forecast, Kanga was reviewing the possibility of moving the match indoors.
