TROY, Ala. – A day after both New Orleans tennis teams opened their two-day swing in northern Alabama with a victory, each UNO team was dealt a defeat on Sunday to split the weekend's road trip.
The UNO women's tennis team (3-8) had its two-match winning streak come to an end in a 6-1 loss to Troy (10-4) while the Privateer men's tennis squad (5-5) was handed a 5-2 loss by their Trojan (6-6) counterparts.
In the women's dual,
Soledad Calderon Arroyo was the lone winner for UNO on the day, rallying from a set down for a 2-6, 7-5, 10-8 victory at the No. 3 position against Anja Cosovic of Troy.
The Trojans' win was their sixth in a row and improved the squad to 4-0 at home. Outside of their setback at the No. 3 court, Troy did not concede a single set to the Privateers.
The men's dual, featured a pair of wins for UNO as
Rui Silva and
Vinay Kamineni picked up straight-set victories. Silva was a 7-5, 7-6 winner at the No. 2 court in a match against Troy's Mansingh Athare with Kamineni rolling the Trojans' Tadju Davies 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 3 position.
Troy won three of the remaining four singles' matches in straight sets. The lone exception came at the No. 4 court where
Guillermo Aylon conceded a set advantage in a 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 setback.
The UNO women's tennis team is set to embark on a busy week featuring duals at the University Tennis Center on Tuesday against Illinois State, Thursday versus Buffalo and Friday against Jackson State. Each match is slated for a 2 p.m. start with the dual on Friday also featuring the Privateer men's tennis team.
