MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams rolled to 7-0 victories over their counterparts from Alabama State on Saturday afternoon.
The UNO men (5-4) took control of their dual early by winning the doubles' point.
David Malmgren and
Christoffer Appelgren paired for the first time in an 8-2 victory at the No. 3 position to put the momentum in the Privateers' hands.
UNO completed the doubles' sweep with 8-6 victories by the top two teams in the lineup.
Abdelrahman Zaki improved to 5-0 in doubles' play on the dual season by partnering with
Hossam Meligy at the No. 1 court while
Vinay Kamineni teamed with
Rui Silva for a victory at No.2.
Singles' play went in much the same fashion as the Privateers conceded just one set to the ASU's men (5-8). The lone set for the hosts came at the No. 1 court where Silva rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-1 over the Hornets' Bobby Brand.
On the women's side of the court, UNO (3-7) produced its second straight victory and now has won consecutive matches for the first time since 2012 by downing ASU (3-10).
Kristina Martic and
Soledad Calderon Arroyo won their fourth straight doubles' match, dispatching Pauline Denis and Melissa Telfer 8-1 at the No. 1 court.
UNO continued to add wins in doubles' play as
Fanny Benincasa and
Marta Sans paired for their second straight victory at the No. 2 position with
Paula Jimenez Sanchez and
Victoria Svensson doing the same at the No. 3 court.
Like the men's dual, only one set in the six contested women's singles' matches was won by the hosts and it came at the No. 1 court where Sans dropped the opening set before defeating Arantxia Wjingaarde 4-6, 6-0, 10-4 for her fourth straight victory.
Calderon posted her third straight singles' win of the season with a victory at the No. 3 position with Benincasa, Jimenez and Svensson all producing their second consecutive win while handling the bottom three spots in the lineup.
Both UNO tennis teams will resume play at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning against Troy. Results from the dual will be posted to UNOPrivateers.com following the completion of play.
